In un lontano pomeriggio del  2000 ero in giro per le strade dello shopping nella bellissima città di Milano, un città che amo molto, che mi  ha dato tanto, ed è per questo motivo che voglio dedicare questa testimonianza alla memoria del mio amico Gene Anthony Ray, in arte Leroy Johnson, grande ballerino ed attore, che divenne famosissimo  grazie alla serie tv americana “Fame”, in Italia “Saranno famosi”.
A distanza di 15 anni dalla sua scomparsa, voglio raccontarvi come ho conosciuto questa bellissima persona dal carattere gentile e solare, sempre con il sorriso  sulle labbra.
Come accennavo, era un pomeriggio di fine estate, mi trovavo in San Babila, c’era tanta gente che camminava in giro per le strade per lo shopping ed altro; a un certo punto mi trovo davanti questo ragazzo alto, longilineo, vestito in modo sportivo eccentrico, subito mi fermo e dico “che sorpresa, tu sei Leroy, il famoso attore! da  ragazzino ti vedevo sempre in televisione“: mi guarda con i suoi occhi scuri e mi dice:  “ma quanti anni pensi che io abbia? Sono anch’io un ragazzo, non sono poi così vecchio!”. Comincia così il nostro incontro, prendiamo un caffè in un bar della zona,  ai primi momenti è un pochino distante, forse un po’ sospettoso, mi studia e cerca di capire se può fidarsi di me; poi  dice “You are a good man”  e comincia a raccontarmi del suo passato di gloria, dopo essere stato scelto per la nota serie Fame, che ha spopolato in tutto il mondo.
Non mi sembra vero: gli racconto di quando ero ragazzo, negli anni ottanta, che lo  seguivo con entusiasmo in televisione, era arrivata  da pochi anni la tv a colori, pensate che salto nel futuro poterci parlare, bere insieme un  buon bicchiere di vino e poi, vista la natura del mio lavoro di fotografo – giornalista, gli chiedo gentilmente se lo posso fotografare, fare un reportage con lui nella città di Milano, e lui accetta di buon  umore, posa per me, gira per le strade, parla con la gente e firma autografi; lo riconoscono tutti, dalle signore “di una certa età”, che lo adorano, fino ai bambini. Passiamo insieme una bella giornata, ci scambiamo i numeri di telefono, con la promessa che andremo insieme  a fare un bel tour per Milano, per fargli scoprire i luoghi più nascosti della città e per assaggiare il famoso risotto alla Milanese,  accompagnato da un ottimo vino. Leroy è stato un buon compagno di bevute, ho un ricordo meraviglioso di lui, dei suoi racconti  di quando era a New York, sua città natale, dove ha studiato danza e recitazione con grande passione e  immensi sacrifici; poi è arrivato il successo che, come spesso accade, porta tante cose gradevoli, ma anche tanti pericoli, legati soprattutto a personaggi non proprio raccomandabili, dai quali bisognerebbe stare alla larga.
In  questo mio racconto non voglio parlare della vita privata di Leroy, né tanto meno dei suoi problemi legati all’abuso di alcolici, quello che voglio condividere è  la sua solarità, la bellezza che portava dentro di sé e che trasmetteva agli altri con grande calore; era diventato un vero esperto di emozioni umane, riconosceva benissimo chi lo stimava e lo rispettava, e  di istinto allontanava le persone che volevano in qualche modo approfittare della sua generosità; da parte mia posso dire che ho vissuto con lui delle ore piene di emozioni e l’energia che mi ha trasmesso la vivo ancora oggi, a distanza di più di 15 anni, in un mondo così cambiato da internet e dai social, che tanto danno ma anche tanto si prendono, e con gli interessi e lo dico in special  modo nell’ambito dei rapporti umani. Voglio concludere dicendo grazie amico mio Leroy Johnson, ti ricorderò sempre e spero con questa mia breve testimonianza aiuti chi legge a ricordare con affetto questo artista, che  ha fatto sognare più generazioni, nel mondo degli anni ottanta, quando le cose andavano in modo diverso,  oserei  dire  davvero meglio di oggi. Ti vogliamo tutti bene e, come usano dire gli Americani, “I love you, Leroy!”.

Nel 1990 ha partecipato al programma di Raffaella Carrà Raffaella...e saranno famosi con cui ha ballato. Tra il 1995 e il 2000 ha vissuto in Italia, spesso in condizioni difficili,   principalmente nella provincia di Milano ,  ha partecipato al "Maurizio Costanzo Show",  Gene ha confessato di avere avuto problemi con alcol e droghe e di avere smesso per sempre.  Muore il 14 novembre 2003 per un infarto cerebrale.

 On a distant afternoon in 2000 I was walking around the shopping district of the most beautiful city, Milano, a city that I love very much, which has given me so much, and is for this reason that I want to dedicate this testament to the memory of my friend Gene Anthony Ray, AKA Leroy Johnson, a great dancer and actor, who became very famous thanks to the American TV series “Fame” in Italy “Seranno famosi” (they will be famous). At the distance of 15 years of his passing, I want to recount how I got to know this beautiful person with a refined and radiant personality, always with a smile on his lips. As I outlined, it was (during) an afternoon of a fine summer, (that) I found myself in San Babila. There were certain people who used to walk around the streets for shopping and other things; at a certain point I find myself in front of this tall boy, slender, dressed in an eccentric, sportive way. Immediately I stop and say “what a surprise, you are Leroy, the famous actor! From early childhood I watched you always on television”.
